Custom Learning Atelier is an L&D production company creating organizational sustainability through systemic, regenerative learning design. We recently asked Beth Salyers, founder, and CEO of Custom Learning Atelier, to share the company’s B Corp story and this is what she had to say.
Why was B Corp Certification important for you?
I don’t come from the corporate world so when I stumbled upon the B Corp Handbook almost a decade ago, I thought to myself, “that’s a better way of doing business.” Flash forward to 2020 when it was time to start my own biz, I utilized the B Corp Handbook, the community, and the BIA to make the decisions one has to make when founding a company. It was a non-negotiable for me. We would be a B Corp or not be a business at all.
What did you learn from the certification process?
I learned that there are so many different ways to do business as a force for good. As a primarily service-based business, it was exciting to learn about all the seemingly small decisions I could make that could add up to a significant impact. Also, I learned that Certification is a heavy lift. I’ve already booked Carolina and her team for my recertification.
How did your company change through the certification process?
It got more focused. By answering, committing, and putting into place various structures and processes, I was forced to really get focused on our offering and position in the world.
In your own words, what does it mean to be a B Corp?
Being a B Corp means I’m here to do right by all stakeholders. It means I care about humans and the planet. It means I’m not just here to talk.
What advice would you give to others considering certification?
Seek support! It’s a lot to wade through. Especially while trying to also grow and run your business.
Is there anything else that you would like to share?
The B Corp community is spectacular. Like most things worthwhile and world-changing – it’s all about the people.
