I started Cultivating Capital because I firmly believe that business can be a force for good and that sustainability harnesses the power of capitalism to create the change that I want to see in the world.
My work over the past ten years has enabled me to become intimately familiar with how businesses can operate in a more socially and environmentally responsible manner while maintaining financial profitability.

I’ve helped cities and large corporations to develop Sustainability Action Plans.
I embarked on my sustainability journey more than a decade ago by going back to school to get an MBA in Sustainable Enterprise, after realizing while working in the nonprofit trenches that the change that I wanted to see would only be made possible when the resources of the private sector were utilized to benefit people and the planet instead of doing harm.
I’ve also been actively involved in movements to advance sustainability in business on a local level, through service on the boards of the Sustainable Business Alliance, Bay Area Green Tours, the Institute for Environmental Entrepreneurship, and B Local, the board for local B Corps.
And, as a business owner myself, I’ve encountered the myriad decisions that must be made to ensure that my own business is sustainable.
What I’ve learned from all this is that most people want to do the right thing in their businesses, and gain the competitive advantages that come with building a sustainable business, but they run into challenges.
It’s not always easy to figure out how to embed sustainability in your organization.
How do you implement sustainability initiatives when you don’t have much time or money? How do you engage employees? How do you figure out where to start? How do you decide which projects you should work on?
These are all common challenges, and my work is focused on helping you overcome them.
My goal is to share what I know – my understanding of best practices and my insights into what is actually working for hundreds of businesses – to help you build a better business, one that aligns with your values so that you can be profitable while improving your social and environmental performance.
