We recently asked Steven Wong, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Ready State, to share his company’s B Corp story, and this is what he had to say.
Why was B Corp Certification important for you?
Through B Corp Certification, we attempt to answer the question: How can we use our business as a lever to make a positive impact in people’s lives?
What did you learn from the certification process?
We learned that the certification was much more rigorous than we realized and very much more than just a label. It also exposed us to the breadth of things we could be doing better. It tested the commitment of the business to doing good.
How did your company change through the certification process?
Being a B Corp has guided our decision-making, and we’ve found that there are a number of choices in what work we do and who we work with that have been made much easier now that we are certified. It’s easier to say no.
In your own words, what does it mean to be a B Corp?
It means putting your money where your mouth is.
What advice would you give to others considering certification?
This is a huge time commitment and you have to be prepared to spend months (and months) on the application. But if you are committed, you should work with a professional who knows the process and can provide guidance.
