Company: Myriad
Location: Raleigh, North Carolina
Industry: Video production
Final B Corp Score: 80.6
We recently asked Will Feichter at Myriad to share their B Corp story which culminated in certification in September 2022.
Myriad’s mission is to make original films and video advertising that make a difference: for clients, community, co-workers and the world at large.
Their expertise is finely-honed video production skills. But they back it up with fresh ideas, in-depth strategy, and seamless client services, which allows them to turn on a dime depending on the size and scale of different projects. After decades of working with Fortune 1000 clients on everything from episodic series to one-off videos, they’ve learned how to adapt to anything.
Why was B Corp Certification important for you?
We needed to put structure behind long-held company ambitions and proclamations. It’s fair to say there is prestige in being certified as a B Corp and we’re glad to be associated in that way. Far more important for us is having a clear set of expectations, ideas, and community to draw upon in making Myriad more successful in becoming the type of company we’ve aspired to be for three decades.
What did you learn from the certification process?
It is hard and rigorous for a reason. Also, even though you don’t necessarily have all the practices in place in one area that B Lab measures, there are hundreds of other ways to access avenues of impact. Having a consultant that can light the long path for you is incredibly valuable and much more fulfilling.
How did your company change through the certification process?
We’re still feeling this out largely, but I do know that we aspire to become even better as the clock begins to tick on recertification in three years. The time is nigh to finally (finally) put teeth into our ambitions by implementing the many good ideas we have that speak to being a B Corp and that Cultivating Capital helped us devise.
In your own words, what does it mean to be a B Corp?
It’s a game-changing commitment that is simultaneously daunting and exciting. Daunting, of course, because it’s hard, not required, and easy to forgo the work in lieu of other priorities. At the same time, we see the landscape in front of us and have experienced a small taste of the distinct kindness and progressiveness of meeting other B Corps. What we can do together is thrilling and we’re just getting rolling.
What advice would you give to others considering certification?
Hire a great consultant (Cultivating Capital) and don’t try to do it yourself. You’ll get there quicker and easier. At the same time, do your research and don’t simply offload all the details to your consultant. Even better, consider a broader internal team (versus a 1 or 2-person group) getting involved in some way so as to begin building buy-in, knowledge, and other ways of thinking on this topic.
Is there anything else that you would like to share?
I’d love to meet up with any other B Corp people to just talk shop and brainstorm ideas. And I am always here to help move the good work of Cultivating Capital forward.
